Melissa's Story
My passion for photography began on my 9th birthday. That day, I started capturing adventures with my birthday gifts. A Polaroid camera and Julie, my 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy. I grew up with my camera always within reach. It was a way for me to creatively connect with my world. I'm full of gratitude behind the camera, smiling as I capture authentic yet fleeting moments.
My Grandpa raised me and would encourage my interests by developing my film. At 11 years old, I was bestowed my Grandpas digital camera. Such a neat new invention and yet he was quickly ready to hand it to me. As if he was silently bestowing me his sacred role as Family Photographer. I felt most fortunate to have the opportunity to document my life at such a young age. To be able to accurately reflect back on the memories that have made up my story. By 15 I had been hired for my first wedding. My photography had been mostly word of mouth until I had lost Julie, Grandpa and my childhood home. I think with great pain comes great inspiration. Especially so when those you've lost have had the most profound impact on you.
I've been immensely inspired by the documentary called, "Be Here Now" (on Netflix). My heart was so moved by the meaning of this film."To be present and to not fear the unknown". Andy and Vashti Whitfields empowering message enabled me photograph my pup Julie until her last breath. Julie developed Arthritis by age 7 and I became diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis by age 17. She never let pain keep her from loving life and so Julie unknowingly taught me how to do the same. After she passed I decided to launch Be Here Now Pet Photography in honor of my two greatest passions. I met Vashti at the premier, informed her of the above. She held my hand, said, "Go with your flow and remember if you can't be well, be inspiring."
Within that year my Grandfather passed so I knew within the aches of my heart that I needed to extend my photography to people in honor of him as well. My photography began with them but my passion to express the lessons they've taught me ignited after taking their last photographs. I learned the power of my own self healing would be through the authenticity of my photography. When I photograph I feel both Julie and Grandpa smiling along with me most.
Even in pain life is beautiful, I choose to share my resilient gift with you. I thoroughly enjoy helping my clients free their minds of negative thoughts. Creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere to enable the opportunity for you to truly connect and be here now with me.
